While at the Ferry Building Marketplace, one store stood out in terms of a long queue and lots of people enjoying its products-- Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream, established in 2008. After enjoying lunch at The Slanted Door, we decided to check it out.
The storefront was quite simple, with a blue, white, and metal theme. The funnest part of Humphry Slocombe are the flavors-- lots of intriguing, unconventional flavor mixes and blends. Samples were graciously offered (through metal tasting spoons), letting you sample a variety of flavors before choosing the ones you want to order.
To share, we ordered a three scoop (7.50 USD) with Matchadoodle (matcha green tea ice cream with snickerdoodle cookie mixed in), Thai Chili Lime Sorbet, and Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee flavors. A standard sugar cone was included free of charge, and each scoop was generous in amount.
Our favorite flavor was the Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee, which tasted just like a creamy, bold, and flavorful cafe sua da, and was very smooth on the tongue. Especially intriguing was the Thai Chili Lime Sorbet, which was sweet, slightly sour from the lime, but also had a piquant, fruity flavor and spice from the chili. It's definitely a bit of a controversial flavor, so definitely try it out as a sample before ordering! In contrast, the matchadoodle was as expected--a creamy matcha green tea ice cream base with pieces of cinnamon snickerdoodle providing some additional crunch and texture.
The sizeable queue and quirky but also tasty flavors at Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream will most certainly catch your attention if you happen to be at the Ferry Building Marketplace, and it is worth trying out. Definitely visit the other vendors too while you're at it-- the marketplace is a lot of fun!
