Young Dong Garden (Closed)

*/Update, February 11, 2012: This restaurant has gone through a renovation recently, and I have written a new review to reflect the changes made to the restaurants; click HERE to read it./* Restaurants can bring many memories for some people. For me, this is yet another place which has sparked many memories from me.We've had many big parties and meals here for the 5+ years it has been open. I still remember back then when they served BBQ Chicken on a huge cast iron pan. Good memories. However, this place has changed since its opening. Ownership changes, food changes, menu changes, and more have happened to this place. I would say some of the changes were positive. But some were negative too. One person apparently was mad enough that there was a conversation of cuss words in the restaurant according to their review on Tripadvisor . However, after posting their review...they didn't do anymore reviews, which could mean the review is fake. Entering the restaurant from its ...

Mantou!

Many people have at least eaten mantou in their lives. But have they all made it at home by scratch before? Probably not! We too, always used to buy mantou and then steam it at home to eat. On the spur of the moment one day though, came a thought in all of our heads. Why not make it from scratch? After all, there's now the bread maker, which makes the mess smaller as it's all confined into all area. Click click goes the mouse. Light pops in head. Wrrrr goes the bread machine. Plop goes the dough, becoming little balls. Schhh goes the water in the steamer. And the sounds of muching come out, all within a afternoon. Yes, we have made mantou. And it was a great experience! We did it again a week later and it worked fine as well, although we reduced the entire recipe by half and also even further decreased the amount of sugar and yeast. However, we increased the resting time of the dough by a lot. In addition to just making steamed mantou, the dough can be used for a wide variety o...

ChiMei Frozen Vegetable Dumpling

Available at your local Asian supermarket, these veggie dumplings are fairly tasty. But something cool about it is that they have a nice packaging, with a clear area so that you can see the product. Obviously, you can do many things with them from their frozen state- either steam them, boil them, or pan fry them like we did. The little bag doesn't have very little dumplings either! These dumplings filled the entire base area of our Analon Ultimate pan, which means it isn't skimpy with the size. This is how it looks in the pan after adding water and letting the water cook away. And then plate and serve! With a bit of green onion these look fantastic. I was happy that I took the photos of them with this nice golden brown bottom. Recently, I made them almost look dark brown. They were ultra crispy of course, but then the people who ate it didn't feel too happy as it almost looked like burnt food. Overall taste of these frozen dumplings? Well, the filling was a bit mushy with c...

Happy Noodle

I would say this was a accidental visit. Why? Well, to start out, I had recently read a not so great review on this place from Eileen's blog (Eileen Likes To Eat) . And then I noticed it on TV too, as well as radio. It didn't look like it would be really good. But, one of our friends had noticed this place and had wanted to go for months. And so, when we arrived, I was surprised. Wasn't this the place that was negatively reviewed on Eileen Likes To Eat ? Yes it was. Hmm... (random nervous thoughts go into head) We entered and well, thought the interior seemed a bit dark. No lights on really. All that came in was sunlight. In addition, the interior was HOT. No air conditioning. This would later not help with the eating and hot food coming up. This definitely looked like it was a family owned restaurant. There was a boy who was watching the TV, and the mother who was working behind the counter would watch him and at times tell him to not watch TV as the customers needed the t...
